The Governor also strolls through downtown Brunswick, stopping by local businesses
Brunswick, MAINE – To promote outdoor recreation for children in Maine, Governor Janet Mills visited GearShare in Brunswick today. GearShare is a new non-profit organization that acquires, maintains, and lends outdoor recreation equipment to nature-focused chaperones and educators to help students connect to the Maine outdoors. During her visit, Governor Mills, an avid hiker, donated a Maine Department of Inland Fish and Wildlife ranger backpack to the Maine Department of LLBean.
“Everyone in Maine – especially our children – should be able to experience and enjoy our beautiful outdoors, not just those who can afford the gear.said Governor Mills. “GearShare does an amazing job equipping students for outdoor adventures so they can create memories of Maine that will last a lifetime. I was proud to donate a day pack to students and look forward to looking forward to the continued success of GearShare.
In partnership with the Maine Department of Education, Maine GearShare recently outfitted 108 students from 13 Maine high schools on their Teens to Trails whitewater rafting weekend. GearShare’s upcoming pilot program supports Trekkers’ seventh-grade trip to Acadia National Park.
“Maine GearShare is the result of a truly collaborative process between outdoor-focused organizations, funders, and brands. We all want to foster equitable access to memorable outdoor experiences, and the gear is a key part of this business. After years of work, the board and staff are excited to start this pilot project, see the equipment in action, and test, adapt and grow our model,” said Liv Berg, acting executive director of Maine GearShare.
After her visit to GearShare, Governor Mills joined Senator Mattie Daughtry (D-Brunswick) for a walking tour of Maine Street in downtown Brunswick, including Senator Daughtry’s brewery, Moderation Brewing Company; Vessel & Vine; Hatch Home; The mixture; and small dog cafe.
“Downtown Brunswick is home to a wonderful mix of specialty shops, open spaces and small businesses that you won’t find anywhere else.” said Governor Mills. “I hope the people of Maine get out and enjoy our amazing communities this summer.”
