Neill’s Coffee and Ice Cream: the family place with a history

Neill’s Coffee and Ice Cream, located at 230 E Main Street, is a great place to grab a drink or a cone after a long day of classes.

Editor’s note: This is the fourth story in an ongoing series featuring the multiple cafes of downtown Pullman, ahead of an event on November 18, hosted by the Pullman Chamber of Commerce.

Neill’s Coffee and Ice Cream is a small, family-owned store. Although this is a relatively new company, family and space have deep roots at Pullman.

Located in the heart of downtown Pullman, the space occupied by Neill’s has been a favorite spot for locals for generations. Current owner Miranda Chandler said Neill was previously The Daily Grind until June 2020.

“It was an important part of the community for a lot of people,” Chandler said. “I graduated from WSU 20 years ago and we went to college there. We did not want to see this legacy disappear.

Chandler said she and her husband opened Neill’s Coffee and Ice Cream to provide the Pullman community with a place to gather and relax – a welcoming place for everyone.

The family also owns Neill’s Flowers and Gifts, which is right next to the cafe. Visitors can browse the flower shop after ordering their coffee. Neill’s Flowers and Gifts has been a staple in downtown Pullman for over 100 years now.

“We want everyone to have a place in town in downtown Pullman where they feel comfortable going with their friends and socializing, or just a place where they can have wifi access and work.” , she said.

Chandler said Neill’s offers over 16 flavors of ice cream and has Pullman’s largest selection of coffee syrup flavors, using over 70 premium Monin syrups.

“It’s a great time of year as we always have our fall options available, as well as our winter drink flavor options,” she said.

Neill’s employee, Megan McCormick, said the store’s coffee roasts were made especially for them by Cravens Coffee, a Spokane-based roaster.

“We have a four bean mix that they cook for us, which is pretty rare because most of the mixes will only be two or three bean mixes,” Chandler said.

McCormick said fall flavored drinks are his favorites and are generally most customers’ favorites as well.

“Right now our most popular item is pumpkin pie chai, and we also sell a lot of ham and bacon burritos,” she said.

McCormick said Neill’s currently offers a non-dairy ice cream flavor. and meets the dietary needs of vegans and vegetarians in their food menu. She said they are currently making efforts to offer gluten-free options to customers as well.

Second-year neuroscience major Anna Murphy said she enjoys the warm and peaceful vibe that Neill exudes.

“The first time I went, I was there for over six hours doing my homework and studying,” she said. “It’s very quiet there, so it’s easy to be productive.”

Whether you are looking for a quiet place to study, a fun family outing, or just a nice cup of coffee, Neill’s prides itself on having something for everyone.
