Fat Boy’s Pizza, the Metairie restaurant that has been selling 30-inch pies since 2019, has moved to the French Quarter.
The pizzeria had a 7 month renovation before opening in a historic townhouse next to Pat O’Brien’s. The building previously housed the Old Coffee Pot, which closed in 2019 after 125 years in business.
The two-story structure now has a bar on the ground floor and a dining room with balcony and prep room upstairs. A courtyard and a causeway are also part of the property, which dates from 1829.
Fat Boy owner Gabe Corchiani, who rents the building, said putting a location in the French Quarter “was a given.”
“We want to be part of the resurgence of the French Quarter and New Orleans,” he said.
Major renovations were required, including new air conditioning, plumbing and electrical work. He said a big investment had been made because Fat Boy intended to “be there for a long time.”
Located between Jackson Square and Bourbon Street, Fat Boy’s final location has seen heavy foot traffic since opening on Oct. 29, Corchiani said, and he expects more when the city’s tourism industry rebounds from the pandemic. of COVID-19.
This is the fourth Fat Boy’s in operation, with others in Old Metairie, Baton Rouge and Covington. Two more will open in 2022 – one in Mandeville and the restaurant’s first out-of-state site, near the University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg.
The French Quarter menu is different from the rest, selling oversized pizza slices as well as 30-inch pies, giant pretzels, daiquires, and beer.
There are plans for future restaurants in the New Orleans area, and Corchiani has said he has signed a lease for his first Fat Boy’s in the Houston area, which is slated to open next summer. .
